UCF’s head coach Gus Malzahn has developed a lot of players that have made it to the NFL. With his offenses usually being in the top half of college football rankings, it’s no surprise that teams take a look at his players when they are scouting players to draft. One of my colleagues, Bill Sparks, has already written a scouting report about UCF’s QB KJ Jefferson. Here’s mine on UCF RB RJ Harvey.
RJ Harvey was originally a 3 star QB out of Orlando, Florida. He signed with Virginia to play under HC Bronco Mendenhall. After a season with the Cavaliers, he transferred home to play for UCF and switched positions from QB to RB.
Last season, RJ had 1416 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns along with 19 receptions for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns. This season so far for the Knights, he has had 694 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns to go along with 9 receptions for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns.

RJ Harvey’s STRENGTHS
RJ is a proven workhorse running back, having over 200 carries last year and can easily have the same numbers again. He has solid speed and acceleration, along with solid vision. He is one of the better receiving running backs, with ability to run routes like a slot receiver. He doesn’t turn the ball over either, and shows versatility due to the fact that he went to college as a quarterback.
RJ Harvey’s WEAKNESSES
RJ’s size could be a concern due to questions surrounding if he can handle the physicality of a full NFL season. He doesn’t offer a whole lot in the blocking game, with his size holding him back. While he has solid vision, he tends to dance a little too much causing negative plays.
Draft Projection
I have RJ as a Day 3 pick. He offers potential as a speedy running back who doesn’t turn the ball over and is a great receiving back. However, his size does not help him and he does not offer a lot in the blocking game. Teams will be interested in him to add insurance at the position, and to give him a couple of carries.
